The Zumba craze has swept not only across the UK but the world!
So what exactly is Zumba? To put it simply, Zumba is a high energy Latin-inspired dance workout that can help you shed up to 1000 calories in just an hour!
So how was Zumba born? Colombian aerobics instructor Beto Perez created Zumba off the cuff when he forgot his regular workout music and instead made up some improvised moves to an old tape of Salsa and Merengue music he dug out from his rucksack.
He took Zumba to America and in 2001 was spotted by two Miami money men.
With their help, he’s made it a worldwide phenomenon. Selling more than four million DVDs and enticing more than six million people to attend 50,000 classes per week in 75 countries!
The craze finally arrived on our shores last year and since then it has definitely taken over the fitness world!
Zumba is so popular because it provides a total body workout. The routines feature aerobic interval training, combining fast and slow rhythms, with a combination of moves that tone and sculpt the body.
It targets key areas such as glutes, legs, arms, abdominal and is great for getting the heart rate up for burning calories. It is particularily effective on the abs and obliques. It also increases your strength and flexibility.
A mixture of salsa, meringue and samba moves, the routines are done to Latin music pop hits, including some from Shakira who is a big fan of zumba!
The fact that there is no strict routine to follows means people don’t have to worry about not looking the part. It’s all about the enjoyment of the class with the added bonus of getting a great workout.
So why not get down to your local zumba class? Go with friends and make new friends while dancing those calories away!
